AIRWOLF
High-Tech Helicopter

Design Development
3

As the helicopter was starting to come together, inside & out, I was also
addressing the show's logo type as well as a logo-armpatch for the AirWolf & crew.

first ideas

I started by sketching just what this 'secret weapon' actually was,...
a "Wolf in Sheep's Clothing",.....that flew.
At the same time, I was exploring the use of the initials: AW and/or the words too.

page two

Now exploring sheep vs. wolves with bat wings and combining those with the A-W.

I then created these variations.  One for the (scripted) "Project" and one for the crew patch.

LOGO Type

I started to like the trapezoidal shape of the AirWolf word and then thought of combining that with the
symbol of all helicopters: the rotor blade.  I then thought of slashing that through the word, and the show's
logo type suddenly came together.

Early Interior

Meanwhile, I jumped back to some ideas for the rear seat design, combining the auxiliary flight controls into a
reoccurring
favorite theme of mine, a 'lap-top' control board.  At the same time, I was starting to think about
a flight suit & helmet for this high-tech equipment they were in.

Helmet designs

I now moved into refining and designing AirWolf's flight helmets. Contemporary helmets
were cool and available but didn't suggest an advanced technology. Additionally, the required
oxygen masks covered a lot of a crewman's (actor's) face so I came up with this combined
solution.  It still had the oxygen and com mike at the front but was now low & contained.
I didn't want the various hoses dangling from the front of this unit so I directed them to the
rear of the helmet where they would plug into the seat back.  I also added an electronic
sighting device above the right eye which would, when needed, project a weapons targeting
graphic on the crewman's faceplate, similar to contemporary systems used by the military.
